Manufacturing Processes
Process Classification and Selection Logic
Basic Classification Principle
Metal manufacturing processes can be divided according to how the material changes during production:
Casting Process
The material changes from solid → liquid → solid, creating complex shapes through molten metal forming.
Plastic Forming Process
The material remains solid but is permanently reshaped through molds and external force.
Subtractive Manufacturing Process
Material is removed from a metal blank to achieve the required dimensions and geometry.
Typical Manufacturing Sequence
The following sequence shows a common production flow from raw material to finished parts:
Precision Casting
Creates a complex near-net-shape blank.
01
Laser Cutting
Cuts sheet metal into the required flat pattern before forming.
02
Stamping / Sheet Metal Forming / Spring Forming
Shapes the cut material through dies and forming tools.
03
CNC Precision Machining
Finishes critical dimensions such as holes, flat surfaces and threads.
04
Note: The actual process flow depends on the part design. For example, cast parts may go directly to CNC machining without stamping. Laser cutting can also be used as a standalone process when the cut part is the final product.
Detailed Process Introduction
1. Liquid Forming Process - Precision Casting (Investment Casting)
Process Principle
Investment casting uses wax models to create the initial shape:

Wax removal
3
>>
Molten stainless steel casting
4

Materials commonly include stainless steel grades such as 304 and 316.
Advantages
Complex Geometry Capability
- Almost unlimited design flexibility
- Suitable for complex curves, internal cavities and small holes
- Ideal for parts that are difficult to machine
High Material Utilization
- Near-net-shape manufacturing
- Less secondary machining required
- Reduced material waste
Strong Finished Parts
- Solid one-piece structure
- No welding joints
- Good mechanical strength and corrosion resistance
Limitations
Higher tooling cost
Less economical for very small quantities
Surface finish and dimensional accuracy are lower compared with CNC machining
Typical surface roughness:
Ra 6.3–12.5 μm
Cost Considerations
Main cost factors:
- Wax mold tooling
- Stainless steel material
- Casting volume
For higher quantities, the tooling cost is spread over more units, reducing the cost per piece significantly.
Recommended Applications
Precision casting is suitable when:
The part shape is complex
Internal cavities are required
Corrosion resistance is important
Materials such as 304/316 stainless steel are required
Production volume is medium to large (usually 500+ pieces)
2. Plastic Forming Process - Stamping, Sheet Metal & Spring Parts
Process Principle
Metal stamping uses a press machine and precision dies to apply force, causing permanent deformation of sheet metal.
Common operations include:
Cutting
Punching
Bending
Deep drawing
Embossing
Types of Stamping
Standard Metal Stamping
Used for structural parts such as:
- Brackets
- Covers
- Supports
- Housings
Sheet Metal Stamping
Usually combined with:
- Laser cutting
- Bending
- Welding
Common applications:
Electrical cabinets
Machine enclosures
Equipment panels
Precision Spring Clip Manufacturing

| Common materials |
|
Advantages
High Production Efficiency
Stamping speed can reach:
- Tens to hundreds of cycles per minute
Excellent Consistency
- Stable dimensions
- Suitable for automated mass production
Low Unit Cost
For high-volume production, the cost per piece can be very low.
Limitations
Tooling cost can be high
Not economical for small quantities
Limited ability for complex 3D shapes
Typical accuracy: IT9–IT12
Cost Considerations
Main cost factors:
Die tooling
Stainless steel strip material
Production volume
Large quantities significantly reduce the unit cost.
Recommended Applications
Stamping is suitable for:
Thin sheet materials (≤5 mm)
Large production quantities (1000+ pieces)
Flat or moderately formed components
Spring parts require careful material selection and heat treatment control.
3. Subtractive Manufacturing - Laser Cutting & CNC Precision Machining
(1) Laser Cutting
Process Principle
A high-power laser beam melts or vaporizes metal while assist gas removes molten material.
Advantages
No Tooling Required
- No mold cost
- Fast design changes through CAD files
- Ideal for prototypes and small batches
High Cutting Quality
- Narrow cutting kerf
- Small heat affected zone
- Clean stainless steel edges
Limitations
Mainly suitable for 2D profiles
Cannot create complex 3D shapes
Thick plates (>20 mm) require longer processing time
Cost Structure
No tooling cost.
Pricing mainly depends on:
Cutting length
Processing time
Stainless steel sheet cost
Gas consumption
Recommended Applications
Laser cutting is ideal for:
Sheet metal parts
Small batch production
Prototype development
Frequently changing designs
(2) CNC Precision Machining
Process Principle
CNC machines use computer-controlled cutting tools to remove material from metal blanks through milling, turning and drilling operations.
Advantages
